Producing Fresh Lines of Flight within Architectural and Urban Milieus

ABOUTBLANK is an innovative and interdisciplinary architectural office that since it’s establishment, it has maintained a tradition of collective work, rooted in research-driven and participatory processes. Continuing this tradition today, ABOUTBLANK engages in a dynamic approach, not hesitating to articulate a fresh discourse through functional and innovative design methodologies spanning from interior spaces to landscape and urban environments.

Granted more then thirty prestigious national and international awards ABOUTBLANK advances a hybrid design ethos blending generative conceptual frameworks, affective Metropolitan conditions, critical socio-spatial analyses, and rigorous ecological pursuits. As an office that emphasizes collective production, ABOUTBLANK has collaborated with a number of distinguished international partners, including MVRDV, AECOM and Martha Shwartz Partners. Projects of ABOUTBLANK and articles of founding partners were published in reputable national and international magazines such as Footprint, Architektur Aktuell, A10 and Arredamento Architecture Magazine. Co-founders of ABOUTBLANK attended to numerous of seminars as lecturers, participated in workshop as coordinators and in juries as members at prestigious international and national institutions such as Cornell University, New York Institute of Technology, Skopje Architecture Week, Tirana Epoka University, International Antalya Architecture Biennial, SALT, TAK, İTÜ, ODTÜ, YTÜ, KOÜ, AGÜ, Bilgi University, Mardin Artuklu University.

Productions of ABOUTBLANK emphasize a rigorous hybridity which simultaneously puts forth analytical and pragmatic frameworks, while inventing new capabilities through flexible and creative system manipulations. Thus, ABOUTBLANK is the name given to a virtual plane, that actualizes the organization of different inputs of a variety of socio-spatial vertexes in a process-driven design setup, so as to produce fresh lines of flight within architectural and urban milieus, backed by nuanced political, cultural, and economic analyses.

URBANBLANK is the urban-scale counterpart of ABOUTBLANK, focusing on developing and implementing strategies for urban environments. It’s aim is to foster social interactions and create conducive conditions for community engagement. Advocating for open-source urbanism, it proposes a holistic approach to understanding, shaping, and transforming urban environments in collaboration with all spatial stakeholders. Through architectural and urban design interventions, URBANBLANK seeks to enrich metropolitan culture while prioritizing tight integration with the surrounding environment.

In our proposal for the IN SITU project, the design of public spaces drew inspiration from urban memory and traces, aiming to bridge the past with future aspirations. Throughout the project, active public participation was integral to the design process. Additionally, our Bishkek Future City project aims to generate a sustainable urban environment model in line with sustainable development goals.

Urbanblank aims to create vibrant and sustainable urban living spaces with many projects such as the Yenikapı Transfer Point and Archaeopark Project, which proposes a dualist approach to public integration on a macro-urban scale in collaboration with MVRDV and MSP, and the Beylikdüzü Life Valley Master Plan developed in partnership with KCAP. Engaged in numerous projects at the urban scale, URBANBLANK continues to produce research and advance its work.

BRAINBLANK is an emerging inter-disciplinary counterpart of ABOUTBLANK, expanding the boundaries of architectural production towards theory, spatial research and cultural analysis as well as exhibitions, workshops, video production, and set design. Recent contributions of BRAINBLANK consist of exploratory lectures in prominent international organizations and academies such as Cornell University, Skopje Architecture Week, University of Aberdeen, and Studio-X Istanbul; theoretical articles in prestigious journals such as Footprint, Architectur Aktuell, A10 and Arredamento Mimarlık; an open-source architectural experiment in 2nd International Antalya Architecture Biannual (2013); and a theatre set design for an experimental ensemble based on Büchner’s Woyzeck (2014).
